Gary, I seem to remember Phil sliding a Ferrari into the hay bales at the
Goodwood vintage race last year too. Hurley Haywood is reputed to have blown up
a rare Porsche turbo with an extremely rare engine in a bid to win a race in one
of his guest drives - his comment "well, I was running quite a bit of boost" (it
was cockpit adjustable). I think that retired professional race drivers have a
little different driving philosophy than most of us vintage drivers. If you
beat me, it's not nearly as big a deal as if you beat Phil Hill... And, I
suppose they've spent their entire driving careers driving someone else's car so
they (unlike me) don't take extra care to preserve the machinery. I've got to
remember to NOT loan my car (whenever it gets completed) to some world famous
driver!
