Phil, I raced a 63 Vet back in 65 and while the rear suspension is
different the brakes will be the same and will likely be your biggest problem.

I don't know if they are still available but Corvette had a heavy duty
brake option available that featured sintered metallic brake shoes, 
They were metallic pads bonded to shoes along with a finned drum for
better cooling.  They stopped you pretty good but were useless for a lap
till you got them up to temp.

Also pulled one way or the other a lot.

Then along came Velvet Touch Metallic which were pretty good also, but
not available any more in pads or bond able lining for drums. Likely
some good substitute is out there somewhere.

I am sure some of the people running drum brakes can give you a lot of
help, but brakes will likely be the biggest problem you have.
