They are a mechanical anti-lock-up device that did seem to work. I still  
have a couple on my shelves in the workshop.  No idea if there are any age  
related issues with you using an old unit.
 
My MG Twincam braked so well with the 4 wheel discs that I took the Safety  
Brakers off to give the other cars with inferior brakes a  chance....;-)
