Stromberg CD150

I have a series 5 Alpine and the air valve piston in my strombergs binds
when I tighten down the top of the carb. I cleaned them pretty well but
they are not super smooth. Can I polish them and the inside of the carb
body with something like jewelers rouge or simichrome to improve the
  movement?
If I play with torque on the 4 bolts holding down the top of the carb, I
can improve the movement but the top doesn't seat well with the carb body
(there is a visible gap. Will it run OK like this since the rubber from
the diaphram may fill irregularities in the way the top seats on the carb
  body?
How easy should it be to slide the air valve piston up and down? (Yeah I
know it will be hard to translate text to physical resistance ;-)

  Thanks,
  Chris Mottram
