Speedo Gear Question

After you pull off the two bolts that hold the speedometer cable attachment to
the tail of the transmission and remove it, can you pull out the speedometer
gear and shaft? Is there a lock ring somewhere? Or do you have to take it out
from the inside? Thank you. Tom
