I have just finished rebuilding a gearbox for a MK IIA and to answer your
question, (I don't think there was much change between the MK gearboxes and
Series
as they both use the same casing), you _should_ be able to remove the
speedo gear
drive assembly after removing the two bolts. You notice the emphasis on the
"should"
as after a number of years in place, it seems to become corroded into the
aluminum tailshaft housing. I tried unsuccessfully to remove one during the
rebuild
but as there was nothing wrong with it, I just left it. There are no
locking rings
on the inside.
