     Chris, congrats on your running car. For the starter problem, I would
     also check the battery connection. Make sure to use one of those
     battery tools to expose unoxidized lead so you get a good transfer of
     electricity. Also, make sure your battery clamps are in good

1st to second crunch means youe have a worn synchro ring, or baulking
cone.
     
2nd gear popping out under power is kind a rare one, as when gearboxes
get this tired, they normally pop out of third on overrun.
In any case this problem is normally worn shifter forks.
     
Since the tranny is pretty tired anyhow, looks like you are in for a
rebuild.
     
I have done this before myself, but if youve never done a tranny rebuild,
I wouldnt recommend it, as it will require that you own, or make your own
special tools to properly disassemble and re-assemsble the tranny.

If the juice is definately at the starter and you are certain that the
engine is
grounded, just replace the starter.
