Tom,

I'm not sure about the Series cars but the Mk II, IIA and III's, late
forties to mid-fifties Sunbeam Talbots and Alpines all use S.A.E. 30
Non-Detergent motor oil in the gearbox (transmission) and 80-90 hypoid gear
oil in the differential. I have used S.A.E. 30 Valvoline in the gearbox for
the past 35 years without a problem. Perhaps someone else with Series
Alpines will confirm that Rootes still recommended motor oil in the Series
cars as well.

Regards,
Bob
