After taking our 67SV Alpine on various short jaunts, we decided to take a
trip of appx. 160 miles. The car was running fine, alas we only had 2 gal
of gas and stopped at a gas station...and filled up. Even made sure we put
in the additive. After driving about 2-3 miles the car started to cut out.
Giving it more gas made it worse, if we let up on the accelerator it
seemed to smooth out...Problem is now were doing 35 in a 55. It
straightened up and ran the next 60 miles...no prob..thought it had cleared
up..........WRONG It ran sporadically the next 10-15 miles to our
destination. No one was home 8-( So we let the car cool of..it was
running around 190-195. Heading home it got progressively worse. Thinking
that it might be vapor lock(it was high 80's that day) we stopped at a rest
area and let it cool down to 130. Left there...no better, every time we
went up a hill(impossible not to do in upstate NY) it cut out bad and we
had to drive on the shoulder of the highway in 65mph traffic. The last 2-3
miles home are all uphill, by now we are down to 2nd gear and crossing our
fingers and toes. Last 2/10 mi was accomplished in 1st, AHH...we pulled
in the driveway, our LBC had gotten us home. Now to look under the
hood, next morning go out test drive the car up the hill....no problems at
all. Sediment bowl on the fuel pump was clean. Was this just a bad
dream.... we are baffeled???????? HELP!!!!!!!!!
