Steering box

I am now overdosed on overdrives. But I have another problem (imagine
that). Last night, while crawling around under my car looking for the
short in my brake lights (Lucas, of course), I noticed a lot of oil on my
pitman arm. Generally, oil leaking from somewhere is a good sign. It
means that I still have oil left. But I was curious last night so I
pulled the plug out of the top of my steering box and looking inside I
saw the shiny inside of the box. No oil to disturb the view.

Two questions. First, I remember reading somewhere that you can inject
grease into these boxes and forget about the oil leaks. Is this true?
Second, the oil seal is a 0.25$ ring and I seriously doubt that it will
prevent leakage for very long. Is there any point in replacing this O
ring, and if I do, how difficult is it to replace the bushing in the box?
Can this be done in the car? Or is it better to pull the whole thing out
(this looks like at least a 2 six pack job).
