I use regular old paint thinner in my parts washer. It has a low
flash-point and the fumes will not ignite, unlike toluene or xylene,
and it's cheap. It usually does not take off well cured paint.
As for correct paint for your engine block. I believe all series used
a semi-gloss black. I have a SV and that's what came on mine.
If your main bearing was completely shot through you should have the
crank mains line-bored
