connecting an ammeter

Finally hooking up an ammeter I bought from S.S. (Jaeger. Looks great).
Got it installed on the dash w/ wires out to the bay but now am
considering how to connect to solenoid.

My car has four families of wire connected to the solenoid:

Family 1. 1-8gauge (brown from the alternator) + 2-10/12 gauge (brown
to 4TR box) + 1 to the battery positive terminal;

Family 2. 1 to the starter;

Family 3. 1-14gauge to the ballast resistor off a tab on the bottom;

Family 4. 1-12gauge (white/red stripe) to the ignition switch.

Now I know that I need at least Family 1 (w/o battery cable) connected
on one side of ammeter and the battery cable on the other side (via
solenoid post), am pretty sure I leave the ignition switch wire (Family
4) alone, but what about the wire to the ballast (Family 3)???

Any suggestion on how to hook up would be appreciated. I looked at the
web page w/ instructions, but its kind of unclear.

Also, any problems using 10-gauge wire??

Thanks,

Siegfried Doerrer
