Actually, before finding the hole, my car used to run fine and then just sputter and stop. I used to think it was something in the line, and I had a big syringe and hose to blow back down the line. Then I decided to clean the bowl well, because there was stuff jammed into the corners that I thought was contributing. When one corner's accumulation popped away as a solid piece, I saw the real problem: the hardened accumulation was acting as a diaphram itself, and as it weakened, tended to let the pump drive gas back into the bowl.
