That's a good point. When I restored my '57 Chevy, I had installed the
wrong length (too long), clutch release bearing and the transmission was
putting a force on the crankshaft thrust bearing (pushing in the clutch
springs). It was a brand new engine and after running it for about 30
min or more, with the clutch depressed, I found metalflakes in the
engine oil. I dropped the oil pan and inspected the main bearings and
found that the thrust bearing was damaged from too much thrust force and
probably little oil. The crank was not scored, it was just the bearing
material that was ground down. I think I lucked out.
