Step 1) Test the temp of the water with a mechanical temp gauge. I use a
pot roast thermometer.
Mine did what you describe. After much radiator cleaning and flushing, it
turns out the water passages in the head were very corroded. # 4 cylinder
was almost completely blocked. Save the "Pull the head" step for last ;-)
