plastic in door panels

I seem to remember that the plastic sheets in the door panels that keeps
the water from leaking into the car was mounted on the lower edge of the
window like an apron. Is this correct, and does anyone have any suggestion
on where I can find plastic of the correct thickness and flexibility to do
the job?
