I think that the coolant lines actually cool the intake
manifold. The heat from the block and exhaust manifold
build up in the aluminum intake manifold and it gets
hotter than the rest of the motor. The coolant lines
regulate the temperature and cool it off. To get a
cooler charge than the original system an alternative
would be to add a heat exchanger to lower the
temperature of the intake manifold. The problem with
this arrangement is that the coolant flows out of the
block into the manifold and then back to the water
pump. Possibly you could plug the lines that run out of
the head and then run a separate system with a small
radiator flowing through the intake manifold. You could
use the heater core that you removed form the car and a
small pump, or plumb it through the water pump somehow.
