There's only one bearing in the tranny that has a ball bearing that large
and that is the center main shaft bearing and yes almost everything has to
be dismantled to replace it.
I'm surprised the tranny would run w/ a defective bearing as I would think
the main shaft would rattle and shake and create all kinds of problems.
HOWEVER, there is another place that uses a 'ball bearing' and that is for
the shifter and it's a detent ball to keep the tranny in gear, a more likely
candidate.
BUT it could also be something left out if someone previously rebuilt the
tranny.
