Another tool at your disposal for any such things is Dyekem, a machinist's
dye. You paint it on, it is just color and a light thinner/carrier which
evaporates fast. Leaves a very thin dye on the metal that can be used to
scribe on marks, measurements, etc. Usually blue. You may have seen it on
metal from a shop that had to be marked as to drilling, etc.
It can be used to look for metal contact or lack of contact, such as out of
round.
Very handy.

Three others have already mentioned this - make me number 4.
The piston is hitting the head. Been there, done that.
If yo can shine some light in the spark plug hole, I'm betting
you'll see scuffs on the piston dome where it's been pounding.
