As far as chrome embrittling steel components, it can happen.  The
parts must undergo a low temp heat treatment to avoid hydrogen
embrittlement.  It is just one more thing to worry about with chrome
platting (and some nickel).

Thanks to all who responded about the Zinc.  I'm going to try some
local platting shops first to see what they will charge.  Joe(B)
