In reading all of these I'm reminded of a few facts about cops: They belong
to a club, they're not the brightest people on the planet, they have some
power, and they envy your toys. The potential for corruption or some form of
municipal backsliding that has the same effect is always a possibility:
That's why they call it corruption. Like my friend Barney says "I don't want
their jobs, but I also don't want mean, vicious, petty assholes wanting
their jobs".
I really love Uncle Jack's approach--it disarms them on several levels. As
members of a club, they respect their elders--people move up in the club on
seniority, the top guys have gray hair (and yes, it's all guys at the top).
They might envy our toys, but at least its not some dope-dealing college kid
driving it, we're old enough to have earned them. And no cop in his right
mind tries the same stuff with an older guy that he might try with a kid or
a peer.

I remember the speeding scam we always hit between NC and Myrtle Beach, each
spring after school let out. The local cops would pull the college students
over for speeding and want $100 plus fine. We were all wise to the scam and
only had $5-10 each, in our pockets, the rest of the money was elsewhere.
After some banter, the cop would invariably accept $20-40 as a fine, but
never seemed to provide a receipt - which we never asked for either.
