One of the things I learned in the turbocharger business long ago;  air gaps
make a great insulator for hot things. Yes, wrap the starter and if room make
just a aluminum shield that gives an air gap around the starter. You probably
cannot get more than a 1/4" gap but it really worth the effort.  Stainless is
better, but harder to work with, Titanium is the best but tough to find and
tough to work. it is a lot easier to say this than to do it, but TRY.
Never be beaten by equipment
