I dont think any of the answers actually addressed the question.
For the production catagory, any bore and stroke as long as the block has
the same cylinder head bolt pattern and  intake manifold bolt pattern.  I
think this basically means a small block is a small block is a small block
as long as it is not aftermarket.  Now thats another basket of worms.  My
Pinto motors have always had as large a bore as possible to enhance
breathing.  Go with 4.00".  Besides the P & G pump doesn't know the
difference in bore, just displacement.
