Gary, opinions will vary, but it appears:

1. With magnetos people don't use a charging system because a good
Marine deep-cycle battery from NAPA can start your engine a number of
times in a day and run your other stuff like gauges and coolant pump,
and be re-charged overnight at the motel if need be. With CDI ignition
alternators are used to keep the system voltage up.

2. Some use automatics, some use sticks, but automatics eat more
horsepower than sticks. With some cars due to the distance from the
driver to the transmission, like a rear-engine setup, the automatic may
be more practical and workable compared with clutch and gear selector
linkage. Some automatics don't have the torque capacity to hold
big-power engines, and sometimes people want closer ratios in the
automatics to keep the revs up on the changes, requiring custom gears by
specialist shops.

3. Some people adapt an automatic directly to the rear axle, requiring a
lot of engineering and custom machine work, but some classes of cars
don't allow the engine behind the driver, as told in the Rule Book.

Cheers Bill
