Well, DrMayf, this ain't directly on LSR topic, but here're some comments
about your new digs:

I've thought about those slick "on-demand" water heaters, but the 9kW draw
is one heck of a hit on the ol' 200-amp service. Nancy and I use so little
hot water that I was planning to put the instant heaters in the house when
we redo it this spring. Save holding water hot, I figgered. . .

But the cost of the wiring and the other stuff -- ain't worth it. For many
years I've used a regular ELECTRIC water heater -- garden variety type, 30
gallon or so. I wrap it with the 10-doller water heater insulation blanket
I get down at the Fleet-Farm store, and then wrap it with yet another of
those 10-buck blankets. Then I power it through a timer. I shower in the
AM, so have the heater come on at 5.15AM or so -- shortest possible time is
a little less than an hour, so the thing is shut off just before 6 ayem.

I never never never ran out of hot water, even when we had been gone for a
couple of days and had shut the damn thing off when we left and I came home
looking forward to a shower right now, not in an hour. Now.

There's always more than enough hot water to shower and wash dishes and
clean your private parts and everything -- even with the heater being
"enabled" for only that 45 minutes a day. My electric bill seldom exceeded
40 bucks for a month, even including the fact that all utilities in the
house were electric (stove, water pump, some baseboard heating, etc).

Too late for you, Mayf, I fear, but others be on notice -- you don't have to
spend much to save on your hot water bill. Insulate like a son-of-gun and I
betcha you'll be satisfied.

Yes I do shower each morning when we're at the Salt -- would do so at
Maxton, too, but the barbecue restaurant stench detectors don't seem to
work, so why bother?
