It's been done and is a workable idea if the electric heater isn't
available.
The Model T Ford (1909-1927) ran the engine and tranny in the same oil.
This made them quite hard to hand crank when the weather got cold.
One of the methods of making cold weather starting was to drain the oil
and take it into the house overnight where it was warm.
Another method was to build a small fire under the crankcase in the
morning to warm the oil....Ardun Doug
