Dick, I know a little about that engine/car. 1976 was
the only year Porsche used the 2.0L VW Type 4, four
cylinder engine in a 912. They were also found in the
Porsche 914, the VW bus and certain variants. This was
Porsche's way of trying to drive cost down and broaden
there buyer base. It didn't work. This same type 4
engine was also common to the then popular Bosch Super
Vee professional racing series (single seat, open
wheel formula cars). I raced one of these things for
about five years. Anyway, Porsche used everything
directly from VW so, much should be known about the
912E engine. One common failure of this engine was a
pair of spark triggers located at the base of the
distributor. These are easily overlooked and accessed
from outside the distributor. The car would be
chugging along just fine and poof, it would stop dead.
Those outside triggers were often the source of the
problem.
