He set records with a Barracuda and a couple of different displacement
slant sixes on
the salt back in the late sixties. Much of the work developing the
engines was in Ak's
shop. Ak later came to the salt with a Falcon six cylinder to get
those records ... spent
a lot of Ford's money but they had to retire the records and change
displacement sizes
for Ak to get his car a record. Wilf and Al were at each other for
years about that. More
of the lore and great stories of the Bonneville Salt Flats.
One of those slant sixes now rests under the bonnet of an Aston Martin
coupe ... I think
it's a DB 5. Wilf is very competitive with the car at vintage Aston
Martin events. Gets
some very pithy comments when that "great Aston engine sound" turns out
to be a
Plymouth slant six, properly tuned and hot rodded.
Pikes Peak and the Mexican Road Race were more interesting because of
Ak.
Another salt legend to look forward to bench racing with on the other
side!
