John,
   The TD front plate holder was a plate shaped like the English licence
plate. I believe that the then-current raised letters&numbers were
attached to that plate for the home market cars.  In the US, the state
front plate was bolted to this holder, which was exposed on either side
of the smaller US plate.
    While the piano hinge is a good idea, especially for parking at
curbs, the plate was originally held to the bumper by a pair little
brackets.  These are small pieces of metal  shaped like a combination of
V with an extension, sort of, that have one bolt into the bumper and one
into the plate.  The V offsets from the bumper and the tail hangs down
for the plate to attach.  When you see one, you will be able to recreate
your own in a few minutes with a vise and a drill.
