alright, everybody says that valve float sounds worse then this and a few
have asked:

1. what combination of stuff am I running
2. how old and how was it stored

I'll write up all of this in a sec and will then follow it with another
email that may determine the timeline in which this all happens.

The engine is an original 9:1 engine out of a 63 olds automatic, it has
about 35k miles on it ever but when looking inside it, it looks as though it
was never used.  I do not know the full history of the car, but here is what
I do know.  I bought it from a preacher in Iowa who used to live in Pa, he
bought the car in the 80's drove it to the junkyard and gave them the car in
exchange for pulling the motor and dropping it into the bed of his pickup.
He bought it for use in a kit airplane, but abandoned it in favor of a
vortec V6.

So as you may be able to infer from this it was stored assembled on a garage
floor for something approaching 20 years, at least the end of which without
oil, as that is how I took it home.  The only thing that I ever did to it
was pan it, for the sake of checking the looks of the bottom end and change
the intake to a 4bbl.  The lifter valley looked clean but I did not clean
the lifters or any other internal parts.

FWIW I have often thought that I had a couple of sticky lifters as
occasionally I will get a tick on startup that will clear itself after a few
seconds.  As I said the noise I get sounds like valve chatter and does not,
as many suggested, sound any more expensive or deadly.

I have thought about changing the cam and thus lifters and valve springs to
something more aggressive to make up for the power lost from the old engine.
Lastly I am thinking about stripping these heads and putting the parts into
my 10.5:1 heads left over from the other engine when I do it.

All told this should only cost a few hundred $$ for cam, lifters, and
springs and the cost to check that the old heads are still flat.  This will
of course depend partly on the answer I get to the next email.
