Perhaps all cylinders were getting spark each time.  Imagine the spark timing--

1) TDC compression -- good spark
2) BDC power -- only spent gases, so no effect
3) TDC exhaust -- similar to 2
4) BDC intake -- could cause firing, but uncompressed mixture is less prone
to ignition than compressed.  Further, as Lew pointed out, more spark
energy would go into the compressed cylinder due to its lowered resistance.

The current wave of distributorless ignitions fires the plugs at every TDC,
so it requires two coils for a 4 cylinder, for example.  It's amazing that
it wasn't done sooner...  sf
