VT has two plates. The locals find them very useful; I have sold several
cars privately, and the drill has always been the same. Guy arrives with
spouse, looks over car, agrees to buy it for your asking price. Then he
pulls out a wad of cash, and starts paying you. As he counts the money
into your hand, the counting rate slows as he approaches the asking
price. When he is down to the last few bills, he asks if you would take
less. The rationale appears to be that you will take less, rather than
hand back the money that is now in your sweaty palm.
It always works with me, but then I am weak. In fact, when one guy got
down to his loose change, I volunteered to take less. Anyway, then the
guy pulls the front plate off his old car, puts it on the rear of the new
purchase, and he and his wife drive off (probably to chortle over how they
outsmarted the flatlander).
