I think NJ and maybe Oregon are the only two states that won't allow
self-serve.  I have to think that the gas station lobby (or some other
lobby) was behind this.  IMHO, it's an example of passing another law where
none is needed.  Has anybody ever heard of anyone blowing himself up while
"self-serving"?

The first time I ran into this was on the Jersey Turnpike back in the '70s.
 I had been pumping my own gas for quite a while by then, so I couldn't
understand why the attendant was so irate when I grabbed the nozzle out of
the pump and started filling up my own car.  I though his eyes were going
to pop out of his head.  Since he didn't bother to explain the law to me,
we got into a big argument (being from the south, I thought he was just
being a typical yankee :-)).  I didn't understand why I had to stand there
and wait for him to finish filling another car.
