I'm no carpenter, but my Dad is. Cherry or Walnut would be my guess. =
Your best bet is to go to a lumber store and see what types of "veneer" =
woods are available, this is very THIN cut wood, in sheets. It shouldn't =
be too expensive in the amount you want (two to four sheets, depending =
on the size). You have to be very careful to inspect the pieces to make =
sure they are good quality (no splits, warpage etc.), but I'm sure your =
friend can help you with that.

It's adhesive backing.
I'm going to try to talk to a woodworking friend and see if he can make =
me up
something.
I'm just not sure what kind of wood to use, how thick it should be, what =
