Is there such a thing as an "average" fuel consumption (or "ideal" fuel
consumption) for a stock, standard MGB? If not, would anyone hazard any
thoughts on such an average for a mostly city/suburban (some country)
driven vehicle?

In Australia we can still buy leaded fuel at all petrol stations and I
run my '68 'B on leaded fuel as standard at around 70 cents per litre.
Once or twice (more often if I am feeling rich) each month I fill her
with AVGAS (i.e. AViation GAS - also called "BP Racing Fuel") high
octane/high lead - which has recently gone up to $1.30 per litre at my
local station. There is no doubt, purely from "feel", that the car runs
better on the more expensive item.

I am putting almost a thousand miles a month on this poor 30 year old
beast (I take her - and me - for a country run almost every weekend) so
you can guess that I am starting to look at ways to improve her fuel
consumption (without compromising power - or changing my driving style
too much <G>) wherever possible towards any such "ideal". I need a
target to aim for.
