Yeah, people are mighty brave when they're anonymous.  More typically, they 
can be total a*holes without fear of repercussion.

Although this should make you wary of newsgroups themselves, please don't 
let it color you off of the net in general.  Stay with the email lists.

There are also people here willing to help track down this sort of abuse on 
the newsgroup.  It's the exception not the rule - that sort of stuff is 
absolutely unacceptable, particularly in an auto enthusiasts group.  It's 
no more acceptable on the net than it would be in real life.

Sorry you have to experience this.  But please don't go.
