Too right. My 1989 Toyota Celica still has an oil pressure gauge but it is
worse than useless. It has no graduations, just four bands of different
widths. Acceptable idle pressure is anything from about 5% to 50%,
acceptable driving pressure anything from about 10% to 80%.
It is quite common for owners of cars used for competition to fit a big
oil-pressure warning light even if the dash has a small one. At a hill
climb last year I watched a car fitted with a Mini indicator lamp fitted
right on top of the dash, shining brightly for all to see, go blasting up
the hill having dumped all his oil on the Start line. He got several
hundred yards before he noticed it.
Junk all the gauges, just fit decent audible and visual alarms when
something important has gone wrong. Even better, bring back the Maestro
talking dash. Word has it that MG only started fitting oil coolers because
owners were worried about the hot idle oil pressure.
