OK a couple of things...
First, I just replaced the rubber hose, so I dont think it's at fault.
The SS is about 6 months old.
Actually this is the second time it's done this. We were bleeding it a
week ago and it did it. That time we didnt' realize what was going on
until it had shoved the piston very far out. That was with an old
hose. So I ordered the SS "kit" and replaced all the parts, and got a
new hose while I was at it.
The piston moves fine manually when the SS is off the car - I can slide
it in and out. I noticed that the spring inside does NOT make it come
back out all the time. I don't know quite what the spring is supposed
to do as it seems pretty weak compared to the friction the rubber ring
on the piston has.
I can also move the clutch arm that the SS pushes on fine (when the SS
is not attached).
I also was getting air and a bit of fluid (but hardly any) out of the
bleed valve when we were bleeding it.
We disconnected the SS and I just put my finger over the end of the hose
(the end that screws into the SS) while Wes pumped and topped off the
reservoir. Plenty of air and then fluid came out the hose so it's not
clogged.
