Very common misconception, that. Everyone seems to think they'll get more  
power instead of less when they use higher octane.  Even racers that should  
know better.
In a message dated 1/15/2009 3:14:57 P.M. Pacific Standard Time, writes:

igniting  more. So you need
more pressure (compression) to get it to fire  efficiently.  This can
