Bob-
Cleaning and resetting the gap on the plugs went along with benefits
of leaded
gas...which boosted the octane and acted as a lubricant for the valves but
tended to
shorten the plug life. Remember Sunoco 260? That and a high compression ratio
=
horsepower but at the cost of shortened plug life. Now throw a carbureter (as
op-
posed to precise fuel injection), into the mixture running rich enough to
start and its
worth it and probably necessary to clean the plugs early and often...
...and how often do you "de-coke" your head?
Speaking of economy, the discount auto depts of places like "Two Guys
>From
Harrison" stores carried stuff like "Foxhead" brand reprocessed oil...about
two bucks
a gallon, which went along with the oil-firing plugs and the engine
rebuilding pellets-
just unscrew the sparkplugs and drop 'em in...Which actually worked, or at
least cut
the smoke down for a few hundred miles.
