Hi Gary,
I don't believe there was any real dark secrets to the method of 'Coach
Painting' apart from choosing the right paint - which back then would have
almost certainly been a lacquer, and a high quality brush.
One simply applies coat after coat of paint, allowing each to dry before
flatting back all the imperfections, brush marks, and applying another coat.
You would continue to do this until you have a good thickness of paint. On
the final coat you would simply flat back through various grades of paper
until you are about at a 2000 grit. Then finish of with cutting compounds
and polish to bring a high lustre.
Make no mistake, this will take you a long time, your work will of course go
faster if you use air sanding tools and an orbital buffer.
There you to be a product sold in the UK many years ago called 'Re-paint',
it was automotive paint sold in a can to brush. I painted a Mini with it.
As a source of reference, it might be worth faxing the Factory, to see if
they still have one of the 'old boys' hanging around the paint shop, who
could help. Other than that I am sure that there must be a book somewhere, I
believe I saw a chapter on it in a old book on restoration at my local book
store some weeks ago.

Regards,

Jeff
