i seem to remember having filters like this on some old MG's but i can hardly

was this type of air cleaner intended to be bathed in oil and drained in
order to more or less act as a filter in the old days?

I have an air filter like this on my '72 Citroen DS. Every 6,000 miles I
swish it around in kerosene or mineral spirit (gasoline also works, but too
dangerous), drain it, soak it in clean crankcase oil, let it drain, and
reinstall it-seems to work fine-no grit in the carb throat. Dave Collins, San
Diego.
