I was a certified safety inspector for Texas up until recently (got out of
the Automotive industry) and the laws specifically state that the exhaust
cannot exit the pipe under any passenger area. The trunk is considered the
passenger area of a car; but a bed, which is not sharing air with the cab,
is not. In other words, the exhaust can legally exit the pipe anywhere
after the cab of a truck. Also, look at the 1997 F150 P/U's. The exhaust
exits the side of the truck right in front of the left rear wheel.
