I bought a Miller Mig/Fluxcore welder and it's the way to go.  But run with the
mig wire, either .023 or .030 and use 75/25 gas (75% argon, 25% CO2) for less
spatter than with straight CO2.  Also the gas mix runs better when welding
vertical.  And the mig will smoke less than the flux core.  Tig welders (GTAW)
are nice (read expensive) but may put too much heat into patch panels unless
you're a real experienced welder.

stick and tig, never tried gas welding or sub-arc.
