I'm interested in the same information that Dave asked about below. The
stouter T-5 would be good for my '51 as it is a 3/4 ton and I plan to use
it as a truck (some of you need to control your misgivings at this point).
Did Dave outline pretty much everything need to do so that the Camero T-5
would bolt to a mid-60s 283? Would this T-5 hold up to hauling a trailer?

Also, is anyone aware of a dually rearend from a small pickup (such as an
S-10 set up for hauling heavy loads - uhaul or camper conversion). I'm
sure that I have seen something like this, but cannot remember where. If
I'm not dreaming, would the width be appropriate for a '51? I plan to haul
a gooseneck trailer and could probably use the capacity. I already have
overload springs.

If I stay with the original rearend (which I will have to find - $) I know
that I can replace the differential to obtain better gears ($), but is
there an 8-lug rim that is not split rim that will fit? Or, can I easily
change out the axles to a 5-lug pattern (to fit the disk brakes in front)?

I don't want to beat this into the ground, I just want clarification. I
want to put a 5 speed in my '53 and this is what info I've gotten from
everyone here....

The way I see it, there are two options:

1. Get a t-5 from a 4.3 V-6 s-10. This tranny is stout enough to go behind
my 6 cylinder. Modifications needed are a shortened input shaft. Other than
that use the s-10 clutch, etc and it goes right on. Right??

2. Get a beefier T-5 from a Camaro/Firebird and a tail section from a s-10
to relocate the shifter then add the clutch, etc and bolt on. Right??

Please make any corrections necessary. I don't want to have my truck apart
any longer than necessary. This list is an invaluable resource. Thanks for
all your answers.
