Just a thought, when I built my 48 sedan delivery (kinda a truck, but really
a car) I relocated the battery tray to the frame rail IN the engine
compartment behind the passengers wheel. I used to stock car tray (it has a
substantial lower gusset-ed bracket. I made a box to protect the battery
from flying debris. It was out of the way, it was off the fire wall and it
was accessible. I plan on a similar install on my 51 GMC

                The '58 was a 12 volt, correct?  if so will it accept
today's 12 volt?

                A clean firewall is more popular and desirable...putting the
battery
                under the floor is clean and neat...Same with the master cyl
and booster
                too...But to each his own..it's up to you in the
end...almost any
                replacement battery box from GM will work...If you try to
rework a stock
                battery box you will have to widen it anyway to get the new
12 voly
                battery to fit in where the smaller six volt was...FYI  Chet
