Rick,
Gas tank cleaning - Use acetone to remove the varnish. Just dump in a half
gallon or so and slosh it around. Drain the acetone through a cloth to
remove the solids and then dump back into the tank and slosh it around
again, drain & strain until you don't get any more chunks. Even though the
acetone will look more like coffee as the day wears on, it still will
dissolve the varnish.
Use a 10% phosphoric solution to remove rust inside the tank. My tank had
two big holes in it so I couldn't just mix up a gallon of phosphoric acid so
I got a (FREE) used 30 gallon plastic barrel from a chemical company and cut
out the bottom, placed it on some saw horses, put in a valve in the threaded
bung for draining when I'm done. BTW 5 gallons of 75% phosphoric acid and
25 gallons of water equals 1a 10% solution. I put the tank in the barrel
and left it for a day and then washed it out with soapy water. Then you
must put a couple of hands full of steel nuts in the tank and rattle them
around to break loose the chunks of rust. Then dry out and do the acetone
thing again and the phosphoric acid bath and the nuts until everything is
clean. Seal with POR 15 tank sealer and follow the directions very
carefully. MAKE SURE THAT YOU WEAR GLOVES IF YOU USE POR 15 unless you want
to wear the stuff for 30 days.
