Sorry to hear of your divorce - its a tough time. If it's any consolation,
our 67 Sprite is the only car in our fleet that hasn't had a mechanical
problem during the last two years. 89 Cutlass Supreme was the most costly
since my wife has not moved to Michigan yet and I am not there to work on
her car:
three fuel injectors = $600
water pump and hoses = $350
alternator = $200
computer = $250
Power steering pump = $275
overdrive automatic tranny = $1550 (2 weeks ago)
still needs a steering rack = $350+???
Our Sprite is definitely not a winter car, but it is driven a lot (and also
long distance) during the summer. Like any 25-40 year-old car (or 9 year
old Cutlass), they are prone to periodic problems - no more, no less - and
they are much cheaper to fix.
