John,
Check the small tubes (hoses) that connect the bottom of the carb fuel
reservoirs (float chambers) to the main body of the carb. Again, they run
under the carbs, and can be felt if not easily seen. If they are leaking
slightly (they'll feel wet to the touch while the engine runs and after you
switch off), they will allow fuel to drain away when you park the car. On
trying to re-start the car, the float chambers take time to refill from the
fuel pump, perhaps as long as the time you describe.
They may be leaking so slightly that they don't stop the car running once
you've got it started. The leak is not safe, by the way, so you'll want to
fix it for that reason alone if it's the problem.
