I was talking about Japanese workers in Japan.  That
parental thing is a thing of the past (my Bro lives in
Austin TX, spends a week every 2 mos in Tokyo). 
Regarding companies paying expenses when over seas,
this is not uncommon for US companies to do when you
are on assignment out of the home office, local or
foreign.  I lived "for free" in New Mexico (at Los
Alamos lab) for 15 months.   Then on to FL where my
first 2 years were covered by the company on per diem
($60 - $75  per day for living expenses, 7 days a
week).  One guy was in Los Alamos for 6 yrs, and
bought a 911 Turbo, his license plate was "PER DIEM". 
Talk about pissing off the locals!
